Infectious diseases account for higher mortality and morbidity than any other category of disease in infants worldwide. This is particularly a major problem in developing countries such as Malawi. Reducing the burden of infectious disease is recognised as a health priority by the World Health Organisation and by the United Nations in its Millennium Development Goals. This program responds to the global and local need for research scientists by training learners to develop their knowledge and research skills in the fields of immunology and infection. Apart from theoretical teaching, this module also gives the learner experience in research, which is of great value to potential employers.
